HEAT4Wales

JISC TechDis is pleased to announce a fourth round of the HEAT scheme (Wales only): Using technology to develop or uncover good inclusive practice.

Who can apply? Staff working in HE (or FE institutions in receipt of HEFCW funding). Projects may be specific to the teaching of a particular discipline, supporting a specific role area or may have more generic applicability across the sector. If unsure, contact helpdesk@techdis.ac.uk.

A key focus of HEAT4Wales will be the JISC priorities. Therefore, whilst we welcome bids from all areas, priority will be given to the following areas: Lifelong Learning, Work-Related Learning, Employer Engagement and Business & Community Engagement (see www.jisc.ac.uk/bce).

Funding available: £1,200 (incl. VAT) maximum for each bid. This can only be used for the purchase of technology. Staff time cannot be funded.

Technologies will be supplied by the end of April 2010 and final case study reports must be submitted by 30th April 2011, with short interim reports required in July and November. Funded projects will also be required to submit proposals to the Higher Education Academy conference 2011.

Bids will be evaluated by a panel comprising members of the JISC TechDis team and volunteers from the Higher Education Academy and JISC RSC Wales.

Closing date: Noon on Monday 22nd February 2010.

JISC TechDis HEAT Scheme

The HEAT scheme provides staff working in higher education (teaching staff, library staff, careers officers, staff developers, IT specialists and accessibility or support specialists) with technology with which to develop or uncover an aspect of good inclusive practice. This may be specific to the teaching of a particular discipline, supporting a specific role area, or may have more generic applicability across the sector. Staff time is not funded, as the good practice developed is expected to form a normal part of the routine of teaching and learning, supporting the inclusion model where specific adjustments for disabled students are required less often if the mainstream offering is more inclusively designed in the first instance.

Three rounds of the HEAT scheme have now been funded. In 2006-7 and 2007-8 the scheme was jointly funded by the JISC TechDis service and the Higher Education Academy. In 2008-9 the scheme has been funded by JISC's capital fund and extended to further projects in Wales and Northern Ireland by the Higher Education Academy.

With the help of HEAT funding we also supported a survey in 2009, carried out by the Higher Education Academy’s English Subject Centre, based at the University of London (Royal Holloway). Their report, entitled Staying the Course, highlights the experiences of disabled students of English and Creative Writing.
