Publisher Lookup Awards 2010.

For several years, JISC TechDis has been working with publishers to clarify accessibility issues and raise awareness of the needs of people with disabilities. JISC TechDis is pleased to announce two awards in recognition of the work of publishers in this area: the Publisher Award and the Library Service Award. We are delighted that these awards are being sponsored by Dolphin and iansyst – companies with proven track records in supporting disabled users to access learning in a variety of formats.

See Press Release for JISC TechDis Publisher Lookup Awards 2010.

The first award for reshaping business processes was presented to Elsevier at the London Book Fair last April.

The second award, for e-text services, will be presented at the CILIP Digital Information Conference in October and is aimed at publishers who have been nominated by library staff for their excellent service in supplying books in alternative formats.

We are encouraging library staff, learner support staff, tutors or learners themselves to nominate publishers who have shown high levels of professionalism, support or involvement in meeting your needs for a book in an alternative format.

JISC TechDis Publisher Lookup Award for Accessibility: Reshaping business processes.

Elsevier, a leading publisher of science and health information, has won the first ever Elsevier being presented with the Publisher Lookup AwardJISC TechDis Publisher Lookup Award announced at the London Bookfair on Wednesday, 21st April 2010.

The JISC TechDis Publisher Lookup Award for Accessibility seeks to identify and commend publishers who have developed workflows, practices, protocols or organisational structures that maximise their ability to be able to respond to the needs of disabled customers.

The vision of the award is to highlight the art of the possible, illustrating how changes to business processes can create added value for customers with particular requirements.

Publishers have been encouraged to nominate themselves if they have specifically highlighted accessibility in their business processes. Examples might include streamlining the enquiries process, training technical and production teams in disability issues, creating accessible workflows, embedding accessibility into e-Book platforms etc. The road to truly inclusive publishing is a long one and these awards are looking, not for perfection but, for steps along a journey. We have been delighted to hear from publisher who have started making such steps.
