Autism (Autistic Spectrum Disorder)
What is it?
Autism is
a development disorder of brain function, its is not mental illness, a
disease or an indicator of low intelligence. Autism is a life long condition
and affects non-verbal communication, verbal communication and social
interaction. Characteristics often associated with it include repetitive
activities, resistance to change, unusual responses, difficulty interpreting
tone of voice or facial expressions and having a very deep knowledge of
a narrow range of favourite topics.
Can people with
autism learn?
People with autism have to painstakingly learn, over a long period,
normal patterns of speech and communication, and appropriate ways to relate
to people, objects, and events. Teachers working with students who have
autism must provide consistency in instructions, manner and terminology.
How many does it
affect?
Autism affects an estimated 2 to10 in 10,000 people and is ten times more
likely to affect males than females. It is found in all racial groups
and is unrelated to social backgrounds.
Does it affect
everyone the same?
Individuals who have autism are all very different and may show different
aspects of the spectrum from the more classical forms of autism through
to the more subtle Aspergers Syndrome.
