Slide Transition

Built into Microsoft
®
PowerPoint are a number of options which enable a user to amend the transition of slides (i.e. the manner in which the slide show moves from one slide to another). Different transition options exist, but it is important to consider the distracting nature some content may have on the participants. Generally slide transitions provide distracting barriers to the understanding of the content. However, they may be valuable in a non facilitated presentation to signal new slide content.

If it is felt appropriate to insert a transition effect to a slide:

  • Navigate to
    Slide Show > Slide Transition
    .
  • The toolbar as seen in figure 1 will be displayed on the right of the screen.
  • Select the slide you wish to apply the transition effect to and select the transition option e.g. 'Box In' or 'Push Down'.
  • Selecting an option in the list will preview the transition effect on the chosen slide.

It is recommended for accessibility purposes the slide transition be kept relatively simple (the default should be set to 'No Transition') as otherwise it may lead to the slide material being unreadable and distracting.

Within the Slide Transition menu the transition can be modified in relation to speed and sound. Unless specifically necessary, remove any sound options from the transition as this is likely to add an unnecessary distraction.

Automatic Advancement of Slides

It may be appropriate to set a timed transition for slides. For example, if a presentation was due to be continually played without presenter input on an exhibition stand the slides can be set to automatically advance. An automatic presentation may also help a learner with motor impairment issues, if continual mouse clicking presents a barrier. However, consideration is needed to ensure the content does not progress quickly for a learner with a slow reading speed.

  • Navigate to
    Slide Show > Slide Transition
    .
  • To advance slides automatically tick the
    'Automatically after'
check box and select a time from the options below.
  • To apply timings to all slides select the
    'Apply to All Slides'
button. If this button isn't selected the timing will appear only on the slide chosen.
